Language Structure 'Development and complexity' Can you read patios?
Many Jamaicans are always
so confused when persons ask us “where did we learn English” because in Jamaica
more than often we speak Standard English (yes with one and two patois words in
there) but for me though I love patois I would never classify it as my second
language (though I can/do speak patois if needed).
So the discussion on the
complexity and development of language was one I found rather interesting. N.B the
picture above as just sayings actual Patois is below.
Prehistoric man’s
language was forced to advance when tribes merged or interacted so that they could
communicate, an example is bobo represents sun for tribe 1 and komo for tribe 2
but when tribe 1 and 2 merged because of changes in the environment such as flooding
then they would have to find a new way to communicate between both tribes with
the assumption that neither would be willing to abandon their “native tongue”
and this leads to complexities in language development.
I remember watching a show
and hearing the actress say that each household in Italy has its own dialect
and the same goes for Jamaica, each parish has their own words/accent and use
of Patois but unlike prehistoric man there is still some uniformity to the extent
where we are able to communicate clearly with each other from other parishes.
But does this mean that as
Jamaicans we should not be confused when asked about our abilities to speak English
as not only is our Patois ‘famous’ but yes it does have a mind of its own and linguists
have been trying for years to get the Patois dictionary completed as well as
teach patios in schools but no one really knows how that would work as the structure of an unofficial language that varies from parish to parish is not so easy to document (complexities will arise). Can you
read this because I can?
If you require another
version of the above in a milder Patios format please let me know.
But can our patois be
related to the dialect of the “tribe” while English is the complex language
that allows all tribes (parishes and countries) to communicate? As the piece
about said “more than 40 creole language are out there” and with each having its
own structure and concepts for communication such as the non verbal speech seen
below then wasn't English a needed way to communicate for civilized man?
The reading from the
development of language in the primitive society stated that Tasmanians have no
word to designate such qualities as sweet, hot, hard cold, long, short or
round. Instead of “hard” they say “like a stone”; instead of “high”, “high
legs”; instead of “round”, “like a ball, like the moon”, adding an explanatory
gesture. Similarly, on the Bismarck Archipelago there are no words for colors,
which are designated in the same way, by naming an object that brings them to
mind.
The above statement in my
culture reminds me of story telling and the ability to relate your experiences to
others and when you do not know words then you compare another phrase or object
to bring across the intended meaning and this leads to communication.
The reading further goes
to say “Such a wealth of vocabulary is directly dependent on the concreteness
and preciseness of the language of primitive man. His language corresponds to
his memory and his mentality.” but for us does this mean that the
language development has taken another form where we create a uniformed language
with our wealth of words and experiences and will continue watching it evolve
as new experiences arise and still find a way to communicate with each other especially with the new use of technology to led in sharing new ideas and words. I swear a new word pops up in Jamaica daily with even
goes further to make our language and communication a pleasure to watch and see.
Language development and complexities especially the
development and the structure of Jamaican patios is a topic that we must
address from the perspective of language in the primitive society and I look
forward to discovering its intricacies throughout my career.
