The occurrence of the divergence between the field of meaning and vision
My cousin turned three this year and he just went to kindergarten. He is just at the right time of transforming from the early child who cannot separate the field of meaning from the visible field to the one who is able to do. The transforming process is developed gradually both in spatial perception and the internalization of the social rules.
One day he is playing in his bedroom, which looks similar to the picture below. He told me he wanted to do the role play with the dolls and the dolls will be having classes with the kindergarten teacher. Then he pulled all his dolls out and put them one by one on the bed. My first reaction, as an adult, is very straightforward. I just imagine that the bed is the classroom and the dolls are sitting in the classroom, and he will be the teacher. However, he had his own plan in his imagination already, which is totally different from mine.
Firstly, I said now the class begins. He said no. He just jumped to the chair and acted as a driver. He said they need to go to the kindergarten first and he is now driving them to the kindergarten. He also said that the dolls are on the bus because the driver is always sitting at the front. After 1-2 minutes' play as a driver, I thought it's time to start the class. He then jumped down from his "car", and said he is now the police! what? He acts like a traffic police.
"Here it is! Kids" He arrived at the kindergarten. But he didn't know how to continue because the "bus" and the "road" seem to be in the same room, and he thought it's not the right place to be the "kindergarten" since they need to be moved to another place! He then moved all the dolls to another bedroom and finally, the classes started and he turned to be the teacher and talked like the kindergarten teacher.
Apparently, he was able to imagine the rules and try to adopt the rules he observed from the social environment and he was also able to separate from the visual field and the meaning field, but since he is just starting the process, his immature divergence between the field of meaning and vision can not help him to use the same space for the same meaning, the completion of the activity needs the assistance of another spatial tool-- another bedroom.
